There are four kinds of higher education institutions in Thailand, state universities, private universities, private colleges, and international academic institutes. They offer the usual array of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Students must hold a High School Certificate or equivalent for application to the institution. Universities set their own entrance examinations. All higher education institutions charge fees and they vary considerably, within the range of B50,000 to B300,000 per annum, the private institutions charging the highest fees. The famous Chulalonkorn University in Bangkok is the nation's premier university and unless you come from the 'right' family, you are unlikely to get in. The academic year runs from early June to October and early November to March. Many universities also run summer schools.
Non-Thai nationals are permitted to attend tertiary education institutions. Most universities and colleges demand a proficiency in the Thai language, although English-taught programmes are coming on stream.
